Incorrect text on Lead column of Report Painter

I created a Report Painter in GRR1 and updated the Lead column on the Report Layout to expand the column to 50 characters.   For some reason it is not giving me the long text with the automatic option so I changed it to the Long text.   It is still coming up with a medium text.   I can't find anything else that will switch it to the long text.   Hoping some experts can help me out!
